I’m notoriously picky.
You should probably thank me for it.
In a world drowning in hype and overpriced jars, my skepticism acts as a filter. I test hundreds of launches a year for work, spending my own time—and often my own money—to see what actually works. Most? Garbage. Or at least, forgettable. But the Joico Defy Damage Shampoo refuses to leave my bathroom.
Even when I’m reviewing some new miracle cream from a influencer brand, I measure it against Joico. Consistently. And it usually wins.
Here is why this bottle has survived a full year in my routine.
It Actually Cleans
Let’s talk dirt.
Specifically, the kind you can’t see.
Product buildup. Hard water. Metal ions clinging to your strands like tenants who forgot their lease is up. This shampoo has activated charcoal and a chelating agent for that.
According to Dr. Brendan Camp, a double-board-certified dermatologist, shampoos like Joico strip away mineral buildup and metal deposits from inside the hair shaft.
If you swim. If you dye your hair. If your showerhead sprays tap water that tastes like pennies. This is non-negotiable. It leaves my hair feeling… clean. Not just “I washed my head” clean, but deeply detoxed, bouncy, hydrated.
But there is a catch.
These detoxifying ingredients can strip away too much, leaving strands brittle and dry. That is where moringa oil steps in. It acts as a buffer against over-stripping, especially since you should only be using this beast once a week. And yes, you need the matching conditioner. Skip it and you are setting yourself up for frizz.
One Size Fits (Almost) Everyone
It sounds like a marketing lie. “Works for all hair types.”
But Joico genuinely doesn’t care if you are Type 1 straight or Type 4 coils.
My mom has naturally straight hair with balayge highlights. Mine is tight curls in front, coils in back. We both use the same bottle.
For her? It protects color longevity. For me? It crushes oil and flakes without drying me out.
Is it expensive? Sure. But does it last?
Dime-Sized Savings
You don’t need much.
Literally.
My hair is mid-length. A dime-sized dollop is all it takes to turn into a rich, creamy lather. Most shampoos require a quarter-sized scoop for a single wash. This stuff is concentrated. A single 10.1 oz bottle lasted me eight months. Used maybe twice a week.
Do the math.
Cheaper shampoos empty faster and feel cheaper. This gives a salon-quality foam every single time.
The Summer Problem
Here is the thing.
I don’t always listen.
In the summer, I swim constantly. Joico says “once a week.” I sometimes wash every other day. And my hair pays for it. It gets dry. Dull.
So I hack the system.
Before jumping in the pool? Leave-in conditioner. Spritz it everywhere.
After the detox wash? Leave the conditioner on for five minutes. Then slap on a deep mask. If I have extra energy (or patience), I put on a shower cap and let the heat from my hair dryer penetrate the cuticle for fifteen minutes.
It’s tedious. It takes time. But the result? My hair stays soft despite the chlorine and the weekly strip.
Verdict
Is it worth it?
If you swim. Yes.
If your hair is colored. Yes.
If your city’s water is hard calcium-heavy sludge that destroys cuticles? Definitely.
I don’t have a shower filter. This shampoo does the dirty work for me.
Looking for alternatives? There are others out there. Some cheaper, starting around $16, that work on similar hair types. But Joico remains the benchmark.
Maybe I just can’t quit my good habits. 🏊♀️
